They were about five minutes from Mom’s, but Chris didn’t want this day to end. Exhaustion traveled through his body, but to have his wife all to himself, he’d turn right back around and do it all over again. Now she leaned against his shoulder, arm cuddled in his lap. How wonderful it would feel to have her hold him again, to feel her body next to his as they slept.

He parked the pickup and boat trailer in front of the house, then moved his arm and brought her into his chest. “Elizabeth, sweetheart, we’re here.”

“I didn’t mean to fall asleep on you.” Her words sounded groggy.

“I didn’t mind.”

She sat upright and pulled the blanket off her lap. “I need to go inside. Do you think the door is unlocked?”

“I’ll walk you up.” He got out of the truck and helped her scoot out on his side, offering his hands. She gave a tired smile before tucking her arms against his chest as they heavy-stepped up the steep yard. “I’ll be in as soon as I put the boat away.”

She nodded. Juwonya’s laughter met them as he opened the door.

Chris hurried back to the car and put everything the way he had found it before heading back inside. “Hey, Mom. Where’s Elizabeth?” He flipped the water on in the kitchen and washed his hands.

“She’s in the bathroom. I think I should have waited until you came in, but with what she said to me earlier —”

“What did she say to you earlier?”

“She stopped the divorce, and you both were working on your marriage. I thought telling her about the cruise —”

Chris lifted his hand. “Wait. What are you talking about?”

“The cruise your dad and I gave you boys for Christmas. It’s in two weeks.”

Chris lumbered over the table and plopped down. “The cruise. I forgot.” He looked up at his mother. “She didn’t take it well?”

“She didn’t say anything. Just walked off to the bathroom.”

Elizabeth reappeared, face solemn. “I’m ready to go.”

Chris rose from the table and kissed the top of his mother’s head. “I’ll call you tomorrow.”

They drove to the bookstore in silence. Maybe Elizabeth was tired? Maybe it was the cruise? He wanted to ask but kept his questions to himself, hoping for an opportunity later. When they arrived at the bookstore, she slipped upstairs to her apartment without a word.
